Alice Burr (1883-1968): Linocut – Witch Doctor, Lake Victoria (Unsigned) 1930s

$30.00Price

This linocut print could also be a woodblock print, but we are erring on the side of caution. We found it stored in a large envelope marked ‘Alice Burr’s Linocuts, Woodcuts, Sketches, etc. Africa, Asia’.

American artist Alice Burr, our distant grand aunt, travelled the world with her sister and cousins as single women in the 1920s and 1930s. Alice later became famous as a pictorialist, her photography commanding much higher prices than we are asking for her linocuts.

Lake Victoria is one of Africa’s largest lake, the second largest fresh water source in the world, according to Wikipedia. It borders Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

This piece is unframed and unmounted. Alice did not sign it but she did title it in the lower left corner. The print is undamaged although the sheet does have a wrinkle in the lower right corner.
