Alice Burr (1883-1968): Travel Sketch – China (Unsigned), 1930s

$10.00Price

We found this poorly mounted sketch stored with an assortment of signed and unsigned travel sketches by American artist Alice Burr, our distant grand aunt, who travelled the world with her sister and cousins as single women in the 1920s and 1930s.

On the back of the mat, in our mother’s handwriting are the words ‘Alice Burr, China (with WWS)’ referring to the world tour the Burr sisters invited our grandmother Winona Wenzlick Sands to join them on in the mid-1930s.

Alice later became famous as a pictoral artist, her photography commanding much higher prices than we believe we should ask for her travel sketches.

This piece is unsigned, and taped to a large mat board, the sketch developing wrinkles over time. It appears it could easily be removed and properly mounted

Sketch: H 7 1/2” x L 10 1/4”

Mat: H 19 1/4” x L 16” (would be trimmed down for shipping)
