Alice Burr (1883-1968): Travel Sketch – Piroe, Indonesia (Signed), 1930s
The places Alice and her sister went in their day! Piroe, also spelled Piru, is a bay and town on the island of Seram (Ceram) in the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) in eastern Indonesia. According to Wikipedia, in 2022 it had a population 16,368. Imagine what it was like in the 1930s when the Burr sisters did a world tour that presumably included a stop here.
We found this mounted sketch stored with an assortment of signed and unsigned travel sketches by American artist Alice Burr, our distant grand aunt, who travelled the world with her sister and cousins as single women in the 1920s and 1930s.
Alice later became famous as a pictoral artist, her photography commanding much higher prices than we believe we should ask for her travel sketches.
In the lower left corner of the sketch is the title ‘Piroe’. In the lower right is Alice Burr’s signature. This piece is glued on all four corners to a somewhat dirty mat as shown in photos. It is in near original condition with some wrinkles. Could be remounted/framed.
Note: If you can figure out what is written on the back of the mat, this is yours for free!
Sketch: H 8 1/4” x L 6 3/8”
Mat: H 21 3/4” x L 15 1/2” (would be trimmed down for shipping)
