Alice Burr (1883-1968): Travel Sketch – Singapore (Unsigned), 1930s
We found this matted sketch stored in a folder entitled ‘smaller sketches by Alice Burr’. On the back is the title ‘Singapore’ in her handwriting.
American artist Alice Burr, our distant grand aunt, travelled the world with her sister and cousins as single women in the 1920s and 1930s. Alice later became famous as a pictorialist, her photography commanding much higher prices than we believe we should ask for her travel sketches.
This piece is a page from her sketchbook, taped to a simple mat with tape as shown in photos. The sketch itself is in original condition, no wrinkles, foxing or spotting. There is minor spotting or foxing on the mat’s left side.
Sketch: H 8” x L 6 1/4”
Mat: H 11” x L 8 1/2”
