Antique American Wood Child’s High Chair / Large Doll Chair
Safety then was not what it is now! This family heirloom may hail from Nantucket and the Burr family circa the 1890s but we are only guessing how it ended up in our family. We know our youngest sister sat in it as a child, no worry about her falling out apparent on our mother’s face, but that was then…
We believe it is a Shaker chair due to its simple, functional design, but we could be wrong. It matches several using that description online. The wood seat is 23” off the ground in the front, sloping to 22” in the back.
The wood has an aged patina and several signs of age but remains sturdy. It does have some stains and spots as shown in photos. We did find one of the arm rests joint appears off, but it is holding steady (we could not push it back in). We also found what were two tacks pushed into the bottom of the seat, one of which has lost its head, leaving a sharp piece of metal sticking out. We do not believe these tacks were structural and we think they could easily be pulled out with the right tool (which we do not have).
We encourage whoever buys this to spend some time polishing it as we believe it would really shine, whether just used as a decorative piece or functional.
H 36” x L 18” x D 16”
Seat is H 23” in front, 22” in back
The top back panel is 13 1/2” above the seat
