Antique Balinese Three Tier Kerongsang Kabaya Chest Ornament

SKU: BP027
$10.00Price

The kerongsang, or kerosang, are brooches used to adorn women’s kebaya blouses which are traditional dress and now considered national attire in Indonesia. They are commonly worn during formal events, ceremonies, festive occasions.

The brooch in this style is usually attached to a necklace rather than pinned onto a blouse, however ours has a very short metal chain attached which suggests it may have been pinned onto a blouse.

It features detailed filigree or repousse work on a gold toned metal which sits atop a tin or thin silver sheet, the decoration reflective of floral imagery.

This special brooch was found in our grandmother’s vintage jewelry collection with a note reading ‘3 curved carved ornaments strung together BALI Burrs’. The Burrs were our grandmother’s aunts who travelled the world in the 1920s and 1920s and collected many such things. V. 33 is scrawled on the bag of the largest plate, for reasons we do not know.

While the brooch is in good vintage condition, we believe a buyer would want to polish them, and restring them for easier wear and adjustment, the old chain not in the greatest condition and uneven in placement.
