Antique Black Lace Mantilla (Catholic Chapel/Mass Veil) and Knotted Bag

$30.00Price

This large black lace floral patterned piece is a traditional head covering worn by women during Catholic church services. It has scalloped edges and appears to be in good condition considering we believe it is antique, not quite sure who in the family it came down the line from. It was found with several other items from the mid to late 1800s.

Wikipedia has an interesting entry about the mantilla including its role in getting some women excommunicated from the church at one time in Nicaragua and Costa Rica… It also includes a photo of how it is supposed to be worn over head and shoulders.

This comes with an antique small knotted/knit black bag with furry pom pom baubles on the end, which is where we found it. The tote is in decent vintage condition with a few signs of age including a missing pom pom on one side, some odd threads, and movement of tightly wound thread on the two poles at the top of the pouch.

Mantilla approx. H 70” x L 31”

Bag/Pouch H 7 1/2” x L 12”
