Antique Chinese Scalloped Nyonya Bowl with Plum Rooster Floral Images
The eight leafed or lobed scalloped bowl represents the eightfold path, with the bowl in ground turquoise enamel. The exterior is decorated with seven images: two roosters, three floral images, and a plum blossom. CHINA is stamped on the glazed base, suggesting it dates from the late 1800s or early 1900s when items created for export to Chinese communities in the Peranakan Straits in Southeast Asia (nyonya) started stamping the country name on the bottom, according to our research.
The plum blossom is a symbol of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. Roosters are associated with good luck as well as faithfulness and perseverance. This bowl would have been saved for use at special occasions, such as weddings.
We believe this bowl was purchased by the Burr sisters or our grandmother in the 1920s or 1930s when they visited China.
It has a crack from the edge going deep into the bowl but it is barely perceptible inside the bowl. There are three notches along the rim of the bowl, patterned equi-distance from each other in such a way they are probably stacking scars from the kiln. There are also natural imperfections including burst bubbles in the glaze and some dark spotting under the glaze.
