Antique Crown Silver Co. Silver Plated Salt/Sugar Shovel Spoon, c late 1800s
This shovel shaped spoon has the Crown Silver Co. name on the back and its characteristic floral pattern in the bowl and scroll motif on the handle. It was designed for use serving salt and sugar, but similar ones also were used for bon bons as dessert spoons. The Crown Silver Co was based in New York. Our understanding is that this shovel shape was the earliest form of ‘salt spoon’, dating back to the 1800s.
This one has signs of its age, most notably that much of the silver plating has worn away exposing the brass or other metal underneath.
