Antique Danish Art Plate (Small) by Herman Kahler, 5 3/4" Wide
This may date back to the 1920s, when Herman Kahler and his brother began designing ceramics. We identified it based on the signature, which matches that of Herman Kahler (1904-1996) – HAK visible. Also stamped on the bottom is DANMARK.
Based on our research, it is made with cowhorn glaze. The colors in the mirror, or bowl, of the piece are raised. A friend with knowledge of these things said it is ‘overglazed’, hence the smudges which seem to be under the glaze. The scalloped, or wavy, edge shows signs of age with cracks and smudges, as shown in photos. Discoloration around the edge is natural, according to our friend who also noticed almost imperceptible little unglazed areas on outer edge, not sure if natural or not.
