Antique Decorative Brass Wall Plate with Embossed Lion Rampant, 12.25” Wide
This gold tone wall plate features an embossed lion rampant with etched scalloped border within the bowl and a more complex etched repeated patter on the raised edge, with notched rim.
A lion rampant is an heraldic term for a lion depicted in a standing posture, with one or both hind legs on the ground and its forepaws raised as if ready to strike. It is a powerful symbol of courage, nobility, and royalty. The most famous example is the Royal Banner of Scotland, but it appears in the coats of arms of many European noble families.
This may have been a serving plate, large dinner plate, or fruit bowl at some point in time, but our grandparents had this as a wall hanging, the hanging contraption still attached to the back.
We believe it is brass, not pewter as so many similar, but smaller, plates online dating back to the 17th and 18th century claim to be. It is clearly tarnished, with spots and discoloration that we believe a good polishing will clean up.
