Antique Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Sauce or Syrup Hunting Jug
This small signed serving jug features the London stoneware brand’s two tone salt-glazed hunting theme imagery in applied relief: a windmill, a man drinking ale, a man resting with his two dogs, and several running dogs along the lower portion of the piece. The two tone glaze is brown at the top and cream at the bottom. The hinged lid, which we believe is pewter, is adorned with a bulbuous pointy finial and, inside, a tarnished mirror like surface. On the base is stamped DOULTON LAMBETH ENGLAND 7819 1687, the latter probably pattern and code numbers. A P or D on the base also designates the designer.
This particular style was reportedly popular in the 1880s-1920s, so we presume this came into our family via the Burr sisters or was inherited by our grandmother from her father who frequently visited London.
These are collectible, most similar hunting line serveware available online significantly more expensive, and our design rare (we only found it in one big lot at auction).
The exterior is in very good vintage condition. The interior would warrant a good cleaning if one was to use this for anything other than decorative purposes.
