Antique Hobbyist Microscope in Wood Case
We have been advised this is a simple hobbyist microscope, used for examining items such as flowers or for dissecting specimens. It is not equipped for professional use, magnification limited.
It may also have originally had a different or larger scope but we found no such item in our boxes… the current lens can be unscrewed and set aside.
It has no markings or branding that we could find, nor were we able to find a match online. It is very similar to the J Zentmayer Dissecting Micrscope launched in 1890 in Philadelphia however, allowing us to describe it as below:
Made of brass or brass-plated, it consists of a circular base 4 1/8” in diameter, upon which stands a pillar supporting a stage, approx. 3 1/2” in diameter. The stage has a recessed circular opening 1 1/4” in diameter. Removable spring clips are provided for retaining objects under observation. The stage is 2 3/4” above the base. The plane mirror has complete movements, and an opaque white back for modified illumination. The lenses are held by a socket in a jointed arm affixed to an upright bar which can be moved left and right as well as raised or lowered using a pinion in the pillar. We do not know the magnification of the lenses, but it may only be 10 -15x.
It comes with its original wooden box and a sample set of slides that we found with it.
It does have some scratches, stains, and other signs of use. We wonder if it is brass plated as it appears that someone tried to polish it and either removed a layer of dark gold patina or affected the brass plating. Again, it is not a professional’s microscope.
