Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencils, Small (Set of 4)

Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencils, Small (Set of 4)

$20.00Price

Katagami are handcut on mulberry paper layers laminated and waterproofed with persimmon juice. They date back to the Edo and Meiji periods (1789-1912). Resist printing was used where a paste was applied to the fabric with the katagami before it was dipped in ink, the open space becoming negative space on the printed design.

These four smaller katagami stencils are most likely from the very early 1900s and were probably purchased by Alice and Marion Burr in Japan in the 1920s or 1930s.

All three have been stored flat, and are in good condition. The larger one has remnants of Japanese text on one side.

Larger Bird Stencil: H 8 3/4” x L 6 1/4”  - this one has been used with holes in the four corners to ensure placement correctly on textiles. One side shows some Japanese text as well

Cricket Stencil: H 4 3/4” x L 3 3/8” – this one does have a crease below the image.

Others: H 4 3/4” x L 3 3/8”
