Antique Red Leather Gold Tooled Book Cover/Portfolio Case (Damaged)

$10.00Price

This rare 19th C leather book cover of portfolio is not in usable condition anymore and we have priced it accordingly in case anyone is interested in it.

The design is European, believed to be from a historical period where decorative bookbinding was common, possibly the Victorian era or earlier given the style and condition. The cover is leather with gold tooling quatrefoil pattern and decorative borders. The interior is marked 22 carat referring to the gold used. Gold tooling is the process where heated tools are used to press gold leaf onto the leather.

The gold remains intact but the red dye is leeching, with the gloves we used to photograph this piece coming away with red dye coloring. The leather is also disintegrating as visible in photos with wear, creases, tears, oxidation, and distressed areas throughout.

H 14 1/4” x L 10 1/2” folded in half
