Antique Roughly Handmade Brass Betel Nut / Snuff or Trinket Box (4” Long)
This endearing two compartment brass box with hinged lid is hard to pin down to an era. We believe it is a brass betel nut box from Asia c the early 1900s but it may well be a mid to late 1800s European or Dutch Colonial tobacco or snuff box. It may never have been used for either betel nuts or snuff however as we see no residue within, despite the aging of the interior, and most betel nut boxes had three compartments and snuff boxes had one. (It is certainly cleaner than the few similar ones we found online!)
It appears it was roughly made, scratch marks on the top and bottom. It also appears to have been soldered/repaired with a silver tone metal at least once although there are some holes in the casing visible still.
It could use a polishing and a buyer may want to use it to hold jewelry or trinkets, perhaps inserting some silk or other cloth into the compartments to add to the rustic elegance of the piece.
