Antique Spanish Earthenware Wall Plate with Floral Motif, c 1840, 12” Wide
The only identical piece we found online for this was an item in the Ashmolean Museum, which dated their 12” plate – in much better condition – to circa 1840 in Valencia, Spain.
A similar one of only 8” diameter was found online claiming it to be Manises style (a blend of Islamic and Christian artistic styles) which was came out of a Spanish town of the same name from the 14th through 18th centuries, although ours is lacking the gold luster common to Manises ceramics.
We know only that our grandparents had this piece hanging on the wall in their home for decades. We do not know where or when they acquired it.
As visible in photos, it is not in great condition, the plate broken in at least two places (repaired long ago) and the back seriously discolored. It does come with the original wall hanging contraption they used.
H 1 1/2” x diameter 12”
