Antique ‘Sunken Treasure’ Bronze Bells, Probably 19th Century (Set of 2)

$60.00Price

These shorter, squatter crotal bells could not be matched in shape to anything online, but we believe they may be Burmese animal bells that were retrieved from a shipwreck. They have evidence of corrosion from saltwater, with blackened areas,  some pitting on the sides, and some textural changes.

Their simple decoration – four rows of lines above the center of the bell and six below – suggest more a more primitive or simpler time than most comparables online. Similar lines are present on a larger bell we were able to identify as Burmese.

They are smaller than others we have in our collection and may have been used to track smaller animals such as goats or young cows or buffalo. Interestingly, they each seem to have a distinct sound (see video).

We believe our mother would have purchased this at an antique market or shop in Ayutthaya or a Thai port town on the sea sometime in the 1970s or 1980s.
