Antique Victorian Scottish Silver Agate Brooch with Silver Fronds (One Missing)
The inlaid Scottish agate features ‘The Earth Rainbow’ a selection of earthy hued agate stone, including black spotted and a striped stones. This type of brooch was popular 1837-1901.
Special to this piece are the silver fronds which appear in five places on the edge as if holding the stones in place. See note about the sixth place missing a frond below. The back is also interesting for a slightly glossy rounded stone or lacquer with glue or other applied hardened liquid in four areas.
Damage Disclosure: The remnant of a sixth frond appears over the black spotted section of agate as shown in photos. We do not have the missing frond. There is a scratch and chip on the front on and next to the maroon stone. The clasp pin also appears chipped in one place.
The silver is unmarked.
This piece was found in our grandmother’s jewelry collection. When and where she got it, we do not know. We describe it as antique as all listings online do the same, most with prices much, much, much higher.
