Antique Wood Carving: Origin Unknown
This multi-color piece features a floral motif with two distinctive wooden panels on each end, and a notch under the central section suggesting this was intended to go on top of something. What that something would be, we do not know.
Despite the distinctive end pieces, we were unable to find anything online that is similar or would explain the notch in the base. We have always thought this was an Indonesian antique collected by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s. But we found nothing to confirm such online. Suggestions from Google Image Search ranged from the Netherlands to Afghanistan and Guatemala!
It is still a beautiful small wood carving. It hung on the wall at our grandparents’ home for decades. It has a distressed look consistent with its age.
