Child’s Vintage Indian Silver Bell Anklet (Chandi Ki Payal) 6”

SKU: B004
$35.00Price

With heart shaped hook clasp and STERLING stamped on both sides of the clasp. We believe these were made in Rajasthan. The Indian state’s traditional silver balls are ‘ghungroos’ which are the small bells strung together and worn as anklets primarily by classical Indian dancers to create rhythm, adding to performances. This one however was created for a baby or very young child to wear. The ‘chandi ki payal’ is meant to bring wealth and good luck to those wearing them.

We do not know when or where these were purchased but our grandmother visited India in 1934 and our mother in 1969 (with one of us as an infant then) … They are in excellent condition, exhibiting a patina that we dared not remove, and the bells make a soft tinkling sound.
