Cobalt Blue and White Patterned Snuff Bottle with Coral Stopper

$25.00Price

This item was turned down by auction houses so we have lowered the price significantly. It is still very special so we would like to find it a home.

Small, airtight snuff bottles were created in China after Jesuit missionaries introduced powdered tobacco in the mid 17th century. They were designed to better suit the humid climate than the snuff boxes common in Europe. As snuff-taking became a fashionable pastime, the bottles evolved into elaborate accessories which today are collectors’ items.

This blue and white octagonal shaped snuff bottle has blue and white raised flat circular discs in the middle of the front and back. We believe it is made of Peking glass dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The stopper, which we believe is original, appears to be topped by red coral over an amber colored stone with red wood or red-dyed wood spoon. The base includes the original price sticker which is illegible as it is a bit worn.

The bottle does have some scratches and there is ingrained dirt in the stop next to the red coral.

We believe our grandmother inherited these from the Burr sisters who visited China in the 1920s and 1930s. They appear never used for anything other than decorative purposes.
