Genuine Hiroshige 1818 1858 Illustrated Book / SM Shiba (Damaged)
Authenticated by Japanese woodblock print dealer S. M. Shiba of Myanoshita, who appears to have been a fascinating man (see http://www.ukipedia.de/118.php).
We believe this is an illustrated book, part of a series, by famous woodblock artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). The Japanese we were able to translate includes a list of images on a torn table of contents just inside the cover, with images accompanied by titles and musings by the artist.
It includes the title GENUINE HIROSHIGE 1818 1858 on a piece of paper glued inside the cover under another piece of paper reading ‘THE GENUINENESS OF THIS PRINT IS GUARANTEEED BY S. M. SHIBA, MYANOSHITA, AS ATTESTED BY HIS SEAL [shown in red] SIMILAR TO THAT ON THE BACK LOWER CORNER OF THIS PRINTS.’
As obvious from photos, this book is well worn, the cover possibly coated in some form of hide that is disintegrating. We also found holes inside the book that may indicate it once had an issue with termites or a worm. It does not have any issues anymore as far as we can tell.
We presume this was purchased by the Burr sisters who were fascinated by Japanese woodblock prints and visited the country in the 1920s and 1930s. They would have left it to our grandmother, and in turn our mother.
