Hand Carved and Painted Vintage George Paulus Wood Swan Trinket Bowl
Inscribed in pencil on the bottom of this beautiful 1960s style piece is the name George Paulus in our mother’s handwriting. George Jackson Paulus (1910-1995) was an architect, a good friend of our mother’s parents, and apparently dabbled in artistic endeavors quite a bit (we also have artwork by him and his wife in our collection). His greatest achievement as an artist, however, was in creating cluster puzzle history, although silent about it until ‘discovered’. If interested, look up the story online.
We believe this lightweight piece was hand crafted from a single piece of wood but for the tail. It appears repaired in two places (see photos). There are scratches around the neck of the swan and a visible crack underneath the tail joint. The interior is rather rudely carved. It also has a patina. We considered trying to clean it but did not want to worry about ruining the painted sides. We love this decorative piece however and would like it, with its googly eyes, to find a new home…
