Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975): Dorftratsch (Village Gossip), 1923 Signed #3457

$500.00Price

Austrian artist Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975) created this color woodcut print, humoriously titled ‘Village Gossip’ as part of a series of folk art style village life-themed pieces. The people in this image are wearing traditional dress from the Austrian state of Tyrol, according to our online research.

This is signed H Gurschner and numbered 3457 in pencil. It is on a poorly cut piece of thin art paper, possibly handmade paper. The colors are bright and there are only a few signs of age, minor discoloration on the signature line and a tiny bit of foxing. It is attached to a lightweight mat board in the upper right corner only, and found with a stained lightweight mat cover piece as shown in photos.

We are not sure how this came into our family, but we presume it must have been purchased by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s or our grandmother, possibly on a visit to Austria.

Print size approx H 5 3/4” x L 6 1/2”

Mat size H 9 1/4” x 8 3/4”
