Jan Lenica: Puppet Theatre Museum, Munich, 1970s (33” x 23 1/4”)
This offset poster was designed by Polish artist Jan Lenica (1928-2001) for an exhibition at the PuppenTheaterMuseum (Puppet Theatre Museum) in Munich, Germany. His stylized, whimsical puppets in bright colors on a dark background are stunning.
Lenica was an award-winning poster designer, as well as a satirical cartoonist, illustrator, designer, and collaborator on animated films. He won several awards during the peak of his career in the 1950s and 1960s but continued working through the turn of the century. His works are in museum collections around the world including MOMA New York. To see more, look up his fabulous works at the Polish Poster Gallery online.
We believe this dates to the 1970s or early 1980s. (Our family did visit Germany in 1981, and may well have gone to the puppet museum…) At the Polish Poster Gallery, his works from the 1970s are selling for EUR 70-200.
The artist’s signature is in the bottom right. The poster is in very good vintage condition, only a bit of damage to the lower right corner as shown in photos.
