Japanese Kakemono Hanging Painting or Calligraphy Scroll (Blank), 170”
This vintage ‘kakemono’ hanging scroll has never been used. It extends 170” when fully unrolled with four panels joined together neatly within. Perfect for an artist eager to create something unique!
It features a decorative olive green with gold floral silk brocade fabric on the end, secured with a purple cord for storage or hanging. The bottom of the scroll is secured by a plastic roll.
Kakemonos are often displayed temporarily, rolled and stored in a protective box between seasons or special events.
It comes with its original box, on the bottom of which someone in our family wrote ‘Kakemonos’. On the front end is a signature and what we presume is a price tag, both of which we were unable to translate.
The paper appears handmade with some natural imperfections, but it also has some shine, as if it could be washi – handmade paper with metallic elements. There are some smudges on the backside of the scroll paper as shown in photos. The front side is clean.
We believe the artistic Burr sisters may have picked this up in Japan in the 1920s or 1930s.
