Kin-Gin Paper by Kneedler-Fauchere (Sample Book of Handmade Washi Wallpapers)
This sample book includes 30 pages of different Japanese handmade Kin-Gin (pronounced kheen-gheen) papers, foil designs dating back over 1300 years according to the introduction.
The San Francisco-based Kneedler-Fauchere created the portfolio to introduce the western world to Kin-Gin, its imported foil wallpapers and custom metallic leaf wallpapers made with brass, silver, and mixed metals. Included in the introduction are samples of the materials used to make the durable papers – kozo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi – still sealed in little plastic bags, and two pages with an illustrated explanation of the paper making process. In the back are pictorial pages showing the making of its metallic leaf papers, followed by several samples of the same.
Some pages have been cut, BUT there are full sheets of three of the ‘damaged’ metallic leaf papers and 6 others (extras) within the set.
We believe this dates to 1950. Our grandparents were interior designers with a love of the bold and eccentric, so we are sure these came from their collections.
