Landing Place and Entrance to the Temple of Honan, Canton, 1840s (8” x 10.75”)
Underneath the print/etching is the below in tiny text: Drawn by T. Allom – From a sketch on the spot by Warner Varnham, Esq – Engraved by C. T. Dixon. The title is repeated in French and German. Printed below is Fisher, Son & Co. London & Paris.
According to Adriatic Prints, the piece comes from a book by Thomas Allom and G. N. Wright entitled ‘China, in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire’ published by Fisher, Son, & Co. of London, 1848. They add that Thomas Allom (1804-1872) was a English architect, artist and topographical illustrator. Among his designs were the Church of St. Peter’s and parts of the Ladbroke Estate in Notting Hill. He provided illustrated engravings for travel books from the 1820s onwards. His work for China Illustrated (from which the copied pages of text included originate) was published in 1845, which is what The New York Public Library states as the date of this print.
The print is numbered 11649 in pencil in the upper right, a number which also appears penciled atop a China Illustrated article about the atmosphere at the Temple of Honan. The number 68 also appears in the upper right corner of the image.
Due to the poor quality of packaging and the fact the paper is not particularly special, we do not believe this piece has similar value to the ones being sold online.
The piece is taped from the back to a simple mat and enclosed in a plastic bag, apparently never opened until we needed to take photos. Provenance is unknown.
