Long Caramel Bakelite Bead Necklace with Gold Alloy Tongue Clasp 45”
The translucent caramel or dark amber beads on this necklace tested positive for Bakelite using the hot water test. They are in excellent condition, despite having been in storage for decades. These belonged to our grandmother. We do not know when or where she acquired them but it was presumably the mid-century, Bakelite very popular in the 1940s-1950s.
The clasp is stamped 1/20 – 12K. G.F. which we understand indicates the piece is gold-filled, specifically with 12 karat gold comprising 1/20th of the total weight of the item. This means the gold layer is approximately 5% of the total weight. The "GF" stands for gold-filled, and the "12K" indicates the gold is 12 karat, meaning it's an alloy that is 50% pure gold.
