AB 007 Very Small Japanese Travelling Shrine (Zushi) 2 7/8" H
The simple casing and unadorned hinges on this tiny zushi cabinet hide a most interesting high-hatted robed figurine inside (not removable), whom we have yet to identify.
The zushi was used as a portable shrine to assist with meditation. This one is black and gold lacquered wood with a beautiful deep blue decorative 'awning' inside. It also has a metal top as if it could be worn on a necklace. While it does not have the decorative metal latch others do, the doors snap shut tightly when closed. There are some nicks and smudges on lacquer on case as shown in photos.
This is one of several zushi cabinets passed down in our family, purchased in the 1920s or 1930s by the Burr sisters, and possibly dating back to the Edo period in the 1800s.
