Nepal Mythical Images Rice Paper Stationery Set (8 Cards & Envelopes)
This vintage Newar stationery set includes 8 rice paper cards of 5 7/8” x 4 7/16” with traditional imagery of mythical beasts applied by woodblock print:
- One has two black outlined dragons holding fish (which we learned represents the transformation of a koi fish into a dragon after successfully swimming upstream and overcoming obstacles, symbolizing the award of working hard)
- Three show a makara dragon in waves in blue outline (the dragon a common motif in Newar art)
- Three feature a red-outlined Chepu the Guardian, whose image is carved over the gateways of many temples in Nepal (from his mouth, he vomits jewels, wealth belonging to the Nagas, giant serpants who guard many places);
- One displays in orange ink the immortal Garuda, a mythical bird-man/king of birds, with snake protruding from his mouth (his devouring of snakes represents the triumph of spiritual energy over negatively like jealously and hatred, or so we read online.)
The rice paper envelopes enclosed in the set have the Nepal Traditional Crafts Kathmandu logo symbol featuring two feet on the back in different colors. We have since learned that they represent Lakshmi Charan Paduka, symbolic footprints of the Hindu goddess Laakshmi and the arrival of wealth, prosperity and good fortune into a home or business.
However, the Nepal Traditional Crafts center appears to be out of business based on a quick online search. Our mother might have purchased this anytime between the late 1960s when she lived there and the late 1980s (she returned several times).
Cards are of 5 7/8” x 4 7/16”, envelopes slightly bigger (you may need glue to seal them)
Weight 1.9 oz (55g)
