Nepali Mythical Beasts Handmade Lama Paper Letter Writing Set

$5.00Price

This 27-page notepad made of handmade lama (or Lokta) paper contains old-fashioned letter stationery with hand-carved wooden block printed images of the mythical beasts of the Himalayan ranges including:

- The Chepu guardian of temples, who vomits jewels from his mouth

- Two Dragons representing power, with wealth giving jewels in their claws

- The immortal Garuda, a mythical bird-man/king of birds, with snake protruding from his mouth (his devouring of snakes represents the triumph of spiritual energy over negatively like jealously and hatred, or so we read online)

- A pair of Snow Lions, king of all earthbound beasts, believed to bring good fortune

Lama paper comes from the bark of the high Himalayan Daphne bush, which is then taken to villages to be pulped and turned into paper.

The paper is in good condition considering its age (picked up in Kathmandu by our mother anytime between the late 1960s and late 1980s)… It does appear she may have used some sheets as there are several pages of the latter three images left but only a couple of the chepu, which are loosely held inside the note pad.
