Nepali Tibetan Buddhism Wind Horse Prayer Flag Lungta Print Cards (Set of 9)
Have some good news or well wishes to share? These large cards can be used as postcards or inserted in the provided handmade paper envelopes or attached to gifts to help spread auspicious tidings.
These were printed by Nancy Chandler during her time in Nepal, used with hand coloring and inked messages to announce the birth of her first child in Kathmandu in 1967.
The image borrows from a Tibetan Prayer Flag ‘wind horse’ print, although missing the first and last lines of mantra, sutra or prayer that was printed on it. (We have prints of the original prayer flag art available under Buddhist artifacts on this website.)
According to Himalayan Art Resources (Himalayanart.org), Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags often feature images of animals alongside mantras, sutras (texts from the Buddha’s teachings) or prayers (usually for goodwill and a long life). They are meant to be fixed wherever the wind blows.
The ‘wind horse’ in the center is a traditional image. The Tibetan word for the ‘wind horse’ is ‘lungta’ which is now what prayer flags are called as well. They say the horse rides the wind and carries auspicious wishes and prayers to the world. It is a symbol of good fortune and positive energy.
We are a little bit suspicious of the artwork as we found nothing else like it online and the horse looks very much like something our mother Nancy Chandler may have designed…
We have packed these in sets of 9 as this is an auspicious number. As described by TibetTravel.org: The odd number "9" means everything for local Tibetans. "9 rivers" means the place of all the rivers collected together. "9 people" means all living creatures. "9 needs" means all the needs and "9 wishes" means all the wishes. In a word, "9" is always used to express "much" in Tibetan.
Card size: H 4 5/8” x L 6”
Handmade envelopes from Nepal are included.
