Orihon Accordion Notebook/Sketchbook: Blue Red White (4 1/8” x 3”)
This small Japanese accordion notebook, or orihon, has cloth covered front and back panels with a floral theme. It is in excellent condition but for a bit of warping of the cloth on the cover and some bleeding of the dark blue indigo dye as shown in photos.
It can be used as a sketchbook, journal, travel log, scrapbook, or as whatever sparks your imagination.
According to Wikipedia, the accordion-fold book binding format evolved during the Tang Dynasty in China (618-907) as an alternative to scrolls, making texts easier to handle and read. Widely used for Buddhist scriptures, it spread to Japan and Korean with the expansion of Buddhism. (Can you imagine the person who broke with traditions and came up with the idea of just folding paper within the scroll leading to the adoption of this ‘newfangled’ book binding method?)
