Ralph Pearson (1883-1958): Cypress Grove – Monterey, # 64, 1922

$300.00Price

This limited edition etching print is pencil titled in the lower left, signed in the lower right, and at the base of the print is what we believe reads ‘Seventh State’, the meaning of which we are not sure, however it appears to be in the artist’s original handwriting.

Ralph Pearson was an American artist who hailed from Iowa, where he started as a newspaper boy then became a newsstand owner, eventually expanding into stationery stores. He had his eyes opened by the modern art movement, and, after studying modern art in New York, he moved to New Mexico in 1919, where he sold greeting cards with his artwork. He reportedly visited California often in the 1920s before moving to the East Coast and taking up teaching.

This piece was poorly mounted by the top corners on a piece of low quality art paper decades ago and, as a result, there are some wrinkles in the upper corners as shown in photos. The paper it is on is very lightweight as well.

We suspect it was collected by the Burr sisters and passed down through our family to us, but we cannot confirm who, when, or where this was purchased.
