Rare Antique Black Bisque Doll, Jointed (In Need of Repair), 6” Tall
- We are consulting an expert to assess this doll’s value in its current condition and confirm it if is in fact bisque -
As shown in photos, the string holding the head in place broke and we believe the left arm string is also loose or broken. Otherwise this doll, her clothing, and her other joint attachments seem to be in very good condition for her age.
We believe the doll is made of jointed wood and composition. Her hair appears to have been intricately woven atop a net around some string, some string now loose. Her eyes include eyelashes all around her eyes, which seems unique. Her mouth is slightly open with several baby teeth showing. She has three layers of clothing on, including the smock on the exterior, with a slip underneath, and knee length open drawers, or split drawers, as was custom in the 1800s and early 1900s.
There is no stamp on the back of her neck or on her feet where we were instructed to look. We are uncomfortable with the idea of removing her clothing to check for maker’s marks, which is why we wish to consult an expert.
We found her with a note from our grandmother describing her as antique. It may have belonged to her mother or her great aunts, the Burr sisters. We did have family in Germany in the 1850s. Perhaps this belonged to one of them. Germany bisque dollmakers of the time did create similarly beautiful black bisque dolls.
