Rare Vintage Lincoln Imp Gargoyle Wood Replica Statuette

$20.00Price

The Lincoln Imp is a famous grotesque carving of a medieval gargoyle found in the Lincoln Cathedral in England, which was built in the 13th century. According to the Lincoln Museum website, he is a short, thick-set figure with a shaggy or hairy coat. He sits with his right leg crossed over the left knee, with both hands, which are shown as having three thick fingers, resting on his leg. The face is half-human with stumpy horns and bull's ears projecting from the head. His feet are cloven hooves.

Legend claims the imp was sent by the Devil to cause trouble at the cathedral and was turned to stone by an angel. If visiting the cathedral, look for him high up above the choir area.

Ours is a hand carved wood replica, probably purchased as a souvenir by our grandparents or mother during a visit in the mid 1900s. It appears designed to be hung or clipped to something like curtains or a hanging textile as evident from the pins in the back. The holes in the back may have been designed to be attached to a door knocker mount, as many used them as door knockers in the day! Many believe the imp brings good luck…

This little imp is in excellent vintage condition. It does have a scratch in the lower leg where a white line can be seen inside the ankle. It does not appear to be a crack upon close examination.

We did not find any online with the same features (particularly the beady eyes) or made of wood. We are happy however to help this little fellow find a new home and pricing it accordingly.
