Rare WWI 1918 California War Souvenir Cards/Postcards (Set of 2 + 10)

$5.00Price

By William Wenzlick LLB MD, our great grandfather! The things you learn.

He was artist and author of this creation, which appears designed to encourage recipients to buy bonds to support the war effort during WWI.

We have 2 Season’s Greetings cards unfolded and separated postcards. The cover of all pieces features his signed art (see W.W.) which he describes inside as follows: A guard at the trenches. Soldiers “going over the top” and charging the enemy. Monarchy prostrate and bleeding. A castle on the Rhine struck by lightning and shell. A vision of the Soldier’s sweetheart signaling him.

This is followed by a poem he wrote titled ‘We’ll Win the War’ (Back Brave Boys by Buying Bomb-Bearing Bonds). Copyright 1918 by William Wenzlick of Los Angeles. Opposite is a postcard address layout. The greetings page is backed by a calendar for 1919. The clear concept is that a recipient would keep the back of the card for a calendar and tear off the front to send as a postcard.

(His daughter would go on to be a creative artist herself and his granddaughter, our mother, became famous for her greeting card collection in turn.)
