Sunken Treasure! Martaban Jar with Beads on Shoulder

Sunken Treasure! Martaban Jar with Beads on Shoulder

$5.00Price

This rough looking, hollow footed piece with cracks, fractures and oxidation stains was most likely pulled from a shipwreck in a river or the sea, according to an expert we consulted. He calls it an ‘ocean ceramic’. He believes it might have been Burmese and commented on the unfired ring and organic glazed stoneware, a drop of extra glaze visible in the bowl. Martaban jars were storage jars, common in trade, named after a busy Burmese port.

Note: This piece has a redder tint to it in sunlight, the grey color prominent in the shade.
