Thai Blue Gray Mabe Pearls, approx. 15mm (Set of 2)
These ‘blister pearls’ are dome shaped cultured pearls that grow on the inside of a mollusks’s shell rather than inside the body. They are grown by attaching a nucleus to the inside of the shell. Once covered with nacre layers, the blister is cut out, the nucleaus discarded, and the cavity filled with resin before being backed with a piece of mother-of-pearl to create a finished gem with near flat back. Some call them
We believe these were purchased at the Phuket Pearl Farm which was founded in 1967 and in operation through the 1970s. It focused on producing Mabe pearls, as well as South Sea and Akoya pearls.
One of them has what appears to be crack within on the edge of the pearl as shown in photos.
