Tibetan Silver Kalachakra Tantric Buddhist Filigree Pendant/Amulet Dorje, Nepal
The front of this unisex pendant is a very detailed filigree piece of art with the symbol for the Kalachakra. The Kalachakra is the ‘Wheel of Time’, a tool to help free oneself from cyclical existence focusing on three things: the cosmic (physical and external world), the internal (human mind and body, with all their flaws), and the alternative (Tantric practices leading to enlightenment). The Kalachakra is closely associated with the Dalai Lamas and with Namgyal Monastery.
The back of the pendant features the symbol for the Dorje, or Vajra in Sanskrit. It is a central symbol of the Vajrayana school of Buddhism, representing spiritual power and the capacity to break the bonds of worldly attachment.
We believe this pendant is made of Tibetan silver, which is not sterling silver. Traditional Tibetan silver was a silver-copper alloy, with low silver content. Today, the term Tibetan silver means a copper alloy. The pendant and the chain did test positive for silver on a home acid test however.
We understand this was probably made and bought in Nepal. Our mother lived there in the late 1960s and probably picked it up during her year and a half there.
The chain attached to the pendant, although testing positive as silver, does not appear to be of any value, very thin and prone to kinking. The pendant itself is in good condition with a dark patina that a buyer may wish to polish.
