Unmarked Solid 'Silver' Egyptian Nubian Bedouin Money Cuff with Safety 6"

SKU: B032
$60.00Price

Warning: This bracelet is rigid, so if planning to wear it, you must have a small wrist, see sizing below.

The Nubian people hail from the Nile River region of southern Egypt and northern Sudan, where nomadic people including the Bedouin and Rashaida used these bracelets as dowry. Should a woman fall on hard times she could pawn these off, and buy new ones when in better times.

Ours is heavy and decorated with three large silver tone stubs on chain petals ‘secured’ by chains to two smaller stubs with bands around the bracelet at equidistant points. On the faceted ends, the image of a sun is engraved.

Ours includes a safety chain connecting cuff ends which may not be original as none we found online had a safety.

Ours has no hallmarks, and we were assured it is solid silver, however a home acid test came up negative for silver. Our research indicates it may be 800 quality, high grade but not sterling silver. We are not sure if that would explain the negative test result. It is in very good vintage condition with a nice patina.

We believe our grandmother inherited this piece from the Burr sisters who travelled to Egypt in the 1920s or 1930s.
