Vintage African Folk Art Raffia Straw Horse and Lions (Set of 3)
We believe these were picked up in Kenya by our mother in 1968 when travelling there with her husband and newborn daughter.
The horse is wrapped in orange dyed raffia, the two lions in yellow with cream colored manes. Raffia is a sustainable material, biodegradable and originating from a renewable resource, the raffia palm.
All of these have flexible legs and tails, and glued on ‘googly eyes’ which we love. The torsos are believed to be made of a hollow, lightweight strong straw or bamboo-like wood. These are not in the best of condition as visible from the strands of raffia coming loose in photos. We’d love to find them a new home as we’d hate to have to toss them…
Antelope: H 5 1/2” x L 6 1/2” x W1”
