Vintage African Kenya Handcrafted Candleholder / Nuts Server

$5.00Price

We believe our mother picked this piece up in 1968 when visiting Kenya. This slightly oval-shaped small ‘cup’ features a candle holder in the center, with a ring around it to catch wax. We confirmed its purpose online and noted that it can also be used to serve a small portion of nuts or other snacks.

These bowls are typically handcrafted from indigenous hardwood. In this case, we believe mango wood was used. The bowl is beautifully carved out. The sides have a geometric triangular pattern with vertical lines through each, a blank ink or charcoal used to accentuate the pattern. Beneath this band is a darkly stained base. A very small handle is attached, darkly stained as well.

It is in remarkably good condition for its age. We do not believe this piece was ever used.
