Vintage AG Spalding White Women’s Ice Skate Boots, 1940s (For Decor)
- Sold for décor purposes only. These are not safe to use as skates given the age of the materials. –
These white leather high-top ice skates come with every sign they were once used and loved – scuffs and stains and discolored shoelaces – but one – they are still quite clean inside. In general, they are in remarkably good condition considering they date back to the 1930s-1940s. A. G. Spalding & Bros introduced the fixed plate skates in the 1930s and stopped making ice skates in the late 1940s.
The skates are marked 9 2/3. The boot size is not marked, but we believe they would be a size 7. We have always thought these were other mother’s but she was only a young girl in the 1950s, so they must have belonged to another member of our family, perhaps one of our grandmother’s. The measurements suggest these would be her size however, which was USA size 7.
Fun fact: Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie is widely recognized for popularizing white skates for women after winning the first of her 10 consecutive world titles in 1927. Before then, all skaters wore black. The change in skate color was part of her transformation of women's figure skating, which also included adopting shorter skirts. Today, white boots are the traditional color for women and girls in figure skating, while black remains the standard for men and boys.
