Vintage Balinese Hair Comb, 1935

$70.00Price

Note: The photos do not do justice to the beauty of this piece!

The craftsmanship on this hair comb is beautiful. The fanned out combs, or teeth, appear to be made of strong strips of bamboo or a similar wood. They are secured to each other and the handle with four layers of woven wire bindings (believed to be brass) which in turn are attached to a carved dark wood frame. The base of the frame features a three rowed lotus theme wood carving on both flat sides, with decorative curled metal adornments on both exterior sides. The handle itself has further ornamentation with several bands of woven wire leading to the hilt at the end. The hilt has a small hole through it, presumably for string to hang it up at home.

This would have been purchased by the Burr sisters in Bali in 1935 and passed on to our grandmother and then our mother. It is in very good condition for its age. The only damage noted is a broken side panel as shown in photos. There is one tiny wire sticking up but that may have been where the weaving of it ended. In photographing it, we also noticed a tiny chip in the handle in the same area.
