Vintage Balinese Wood Carved Traditional Dagger Hilt, 1935
This ‘cekah redut’ (literally, notched) wood hilt was intended for use on a traditional ‘keris’ dagger. The Balinese often designed intricately carved wooden hilts for their version of the Indonesian dagger.
We believe it is made of dense Areng wood. It has five notches on either side and three on the front and back. This apparently identified is as of less value than those with five notches on either side and one on the front, the strictest design for the hilt. It was apparently designed for use by soldiers.
We believe this was purchased by the Burr sisters or our grandmother on their world cruise stop in Bali in 1935. It is in very good vintage condition, and very silky in the hand.
