Vintage Black Kardex Tiered Flat Filing Album/Visible Record Book, 1950s
This portable record-keeping system used overlapping paper pockets with visible indexing (the bottom of each pocket showing) for easy retrieval of information simply by flipping open the tab one was seeking. The healthcare industry popularized the concept, but it found its application in many other business and personal contexts. In our case, we believe our grandparents, interior decorators, used it to store samples of materials for easy flipping through with clients.
It predated the Rolodex by decades. Kardex was founded in 1898, Rolodex in 1958. Like Rolodex, however, it became a generic term for this style of flat filing.
This comes with Kardex branded cards in a Spel-Binder ‘virgin vinyl’ covered binder (model CPV-14) with only one tier of pockets.
This one has stapled on plastic tabs for the bottom of each card (whether they came like that or our grandfather added them, we do not know). Each page has several slits, allowing for use to store papers or photos of different sizes.
We have left our grandparent’s blank papers inside, but they can easily be removed to start clean. There are 32 pages, with the ability to insert photos or papers on both sides.
There is a crease in the flap covering the top card. The cover has a spot on it. Other than that, this is in fine vintage condition.
