Vintage Buddhist Photography: Shakyamuni Triad (Front View), Horyu-Ji Temple

$5.00Price

This photo depicts a statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha (enlightened Buddha) flanked by two attendant bodhisattvas, believed to be Manjushri representing wisdom and Samantabhadra representing practice and meditation.

The statue sits in Main Hall (Kondo) of the Horyu-Ji Temple in Nara, Japan, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country.

Our great grand aunts, the Burr sisters, travelled to Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, one of them scribbling in pencil lightly on the back: "Kondo alter Trinity at Horiyu. Lotus seed gods."

The photo is in vintage condition with some notches along the edges, especially the top and bottom. It is stamped in the lower right corner as shown in the photos.
